Canapino takes dominant pole at Potrero de los Funes
Equipo Oficial Chevrolet’s Agustín Canapino blitzed the qualifying session at Potrero de los Funes to take pole position by more than a second over Equipo Fiat Oil Combustibles driver Gabriel Ponce De León.
The 21-year-old rookie was fastest in every session of the weekend so far in the Chevrolet Cruze TC 2000 car, including all three of the qualifying heats. Canapino saved his best lap until Q3, setting a time of 2:28.096 around the 3.9 mile circuit to claim his second pole position of the season.
Gabriel Ponce De León was the closest driver to Canapino in the Fiat Linea, setting a time of 2:29.164 in the final qualifying segment. Ford-YPF driver Fabian Yannantuoni completed the top three in the Ford Focus.
Two-time Champion José María López was fourth quickest in the second fastest Fiat, whilst Mariano Werner, currently in second place in the Championship just four points down on his Toyota Team Argentina team-mate Matías Rossi was fifth fastest in the Corolla.
Rossi qualified seventh, split from his team-mate by Leonel Pernía, the fastest of the Equipo Petrobras Honda drivers, with all three in close contention for the drivers’ Championship.
Reigning Champion Norbert Fontana didn’t make it out of Q2, qualifying in 15th place in the Ford-YPF Focus,
Potrero de los Funes hosted the final round of last year’s TC 2000, but is now hosting the penultimate round as Paraná will host the season finale on December 4th. The previously scheduled season ending street race at Buenos Aires has been postponed until April next year.
