BTCS to become the Belgian Sprint Championship

The BTCS will cease to be in 2012, being reborn under the Belgian Sprint Championship banner next year, featuring smaller races and will join the support package of the 24 Hours of Spa endurance race in July.

The six event calendar will see the series race a total of three times at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, supporting the 24 Hours of Spa for the first time.

The series will still feature the 12 Hours of Spa, but this is no longer a single endurance event but the ’12 hours’ refers to the amount of racing time the cars of the ‘Belgian Racing Series’ will complete.

The Belgian Sprint Championship will also race twice at Zolder, with one trip to Dijon-Prenois in France at the beginning of May.

The Belgian Sprint Championship will now be one of three series run under the banner of the Belgian Racing Series, which includes the Belgian Endurance Championship (formerly known as Belcar) and the VW Fun Cup Challenge.

The race format for all standard rounds of the Belgian Sprint Championship are one race of 60 minutes with a mandatory pitstop, and two 30 minute sprint races. Previously races were two races of 1hr30 in length.

The same car types as 2011 are permitted in 2012, with the Silhouette 1 category the leading class of car, but the Championship will also allow cars built to GT4 regulations from next season.

The season starts as this year at Zolder, supporting the FIA GT1 World Championship.
