Round 2 of the 2012 FIA European Touring Car Cup takes place this weekend as the Slovakiaring hosts both the ETC Cup and World Touring Car Championship, with an expanded entry in the ETC Cup.
The circuit near Bratislava was announced as hosts of the second round of the ETC Cup shortly after being confirmed as the replacement for the cancelled WTCC round in Argentina. Initially the ETC Cup’s second round was due to be held in Valencia, Spain, but will now be hosted by the Slovakiaring with the third round taking place in May at the Salzburgring in Austria.
Super 2000 points leader Fernando Monje will be favourite to extend his lead after a dominant pair of victories at the first round in March, but won’t be the only driver equipped with the strong turbo-diesel SEAT this weekend, with Czech driver Michel Matejovský joining him at SUNRED Engineering.
Fellow Czech driver Petr Fulín returns for Krenek Motorsport in the ex-Wiechers-Sport BMW 320si, and will be hoping for a much better weekend after being black flagged after not serving a drive through penalty after three false starts in race one at Monza, and wasn’t allowed to take part in race two when he ignored the black flag.
The Super 2000 class grows with the addition of Matejovský as well as Mat’o Homola in a BMW 320si entered by Homola Motorsport, though also decreases by one with Liqui Moly Team Engstler not entering their BMW for Igor Skuz this weekend.
The Single Make Trophy expands from three SEAT León Supercopas to four with the addition of SBM Motorsport driver Patrick Nemec, with Norwegian Stian Paulsen defending his lead in the class from German Andreas Pfister.
The Super Production class is again the class with the lowest number of entrants, at just two for the reigning ETC Cup Super Production champion Aleksander Tosic from Serbia, and Russian driver Nikolay Karamyshev, who currently leads in the standings. Both are competing in Honda Civic Type-Rs.
The Super 1600 class is due to expand with the arrival of Maurer Motorsport and their three Chevrolet Aveo S1600s, which will join the nine Ford Fiestas which are the mainstay of the German ADAC Procar Series Divison 2 class. This brings the class up to 12 cars with the addition of a nother Fiesta this weekend for Erwin Lukas at the Ravenol Team. After two class wins at Monza, Ravenol Team GENA’s Kevin Krammes currently leads the S1600 standings.
