Yvan Muller was fastest in the warm up at the Salzburgring, setting a time faster than Chevrolet team-mate Rob Huff’s pole position lap from yesterday during the 15 minute session.
The Frenchman’s best lap of 1:26.581 was over half a second clear of Alain Menu’s, with pole sitter Rob Huff third fastest, the only other driver within a second of Muller’s lap.
Alex MacDowall was the fastest of the independent drivers in the Bamboo Engineering Chevrolet, and made it an all Chevrolet top four, with Gabriele Tarquini the fastest non-Chevrolet in fifth for SEAT and James Nash sixth fastest in the Ford Focus.
A few drivers chose to take the Turn 1 escape road on occasion, including Norbert Michelisz, Tiago Monteiro and Yvan Muller.
Rob Huff had the closest scare, spinning around at the fast Turn 9 right-hander and through the gravel trap. Huff did a full 360 degree pirouette off the circuit and was able to rejoin the track and continue with little damage, though he did bring a sizable amount of gravel on to the circuit.
The first race takes place at 13:20 CET today.
