No Asian Touring Car Series in 2012

As had been anticipated, the ATCS’s organising body Motorsport Asia has now officially confirmed that the series will be put on hold for the 2012 season whilst it re-evaluates its options.

The series, which last year raced in China, Korea, Malaysia and Indonesia, was won by Chen Jun San with Team AAI/Buddy Club in an ex-Team Dynamics Honda Civic from the British Touring Car Championship.

“It has been a hard couple of years for the Series and we have decided to stop it and re-evaluate which direction to go in for the future,” said David Sonenscher, CEO of Motorsport Asia.

“We are currently looking at several ideas which would have more relevance for the manufacturers and there are some interesting ideas already forming.”

Previous winners of the series include current World Touring Car Championship drivers Charles Ng (2010 champion) and Franz Engstler (2005-2006 champion), as well as former BTCC driver Fariqe Hairuman, who raced for Proton in their final season as a manufacturer entry in 2004 with the Impian.
