35 cars set to compete in 2012 CTM Macau Cup

35 cars are set to compete in the annual Macau Touring Car Cup around the streets of the Chinese Special Administrative Region on Saturday this weekend, forming part of the the WTCC season finale and Macau F3’s supporting line-up.

The race will be held on Saturday 17th November, with 35 entries from Hong Kong, Macau, China, Taiwan, Japan, and Philippines.

The majority of the cars compete are composed of locally homologated Hondas (including Integra DC5s, Civic FD2s and Accord CL7s) as well as a Toyota Altezza. The Super 2000 touring cars become the focus of the Asian “Touring Car Masters” event, even some of them have decided to compete in the WTCC race instead at Macau.

China Dragon Racing’s Paul Poon and Samson Fung will run a pair of Chevrolet Lacettis in order to defend the title won by Fung last year. The third Chevrolet Lacetti in the event will be entered under Team Pro Spec’s banner, which is driven by young but experienced driver Andy Yan from the CTCC. Eric Kwong (Drivers’ champion of Hong Kong Touring Car Championship in 2012) and Philip Yau (Winner of the Macau Road-sport Challenge in 2011) will enter a pair of Chevrolet Cruze LTs under the banner of Team LF.

Team Buddy Club AAI will also return to the Guia Street Circuit after an eight year absence (Their last appearance was with Shi Shi Wei, driving a Honda EK4 in the 2004 Macau Cup). The team will enter two ex-BTCC specification Honda Civic FN2s driven by Chen Jun San and Morris Chen Han Chen.

Son Veng Racing Team, in which gained the drivers’ and teams’ titles in this year’s Macau Touring Car Championship, will enter Kelvin Leong Ian Veng and Jeronimo Badaraco in a pair of Honda Accords, as well as entering Chan Kin Man in a locally homologated Honda Integra DC5.

Prince Racing, also known as JAS Engineering’s Asian team in Hong Kong Touring Car Championship and Touring Car Series of Asia previously, will also enters a pair of Honda Accords for Kenneth Lau and Michael Choi. The final Honda Accord is entered by Roger Leung Tai Ming of TSB Racing, who will be joined by his CTCC teammates Cheung Hon Bil in a Honda Civic FD2 and Tang Yau Zi in a Honda Integra DC5.

Despite a stronger grid of Super 2000 spec Chevrolets and Hondas, a pair of BMW 320sis will be entered by Alex Liu Lic Ka by Elegant Sports and Lo Hung Pui of 778 Autosport. Lo’s team-mate will be Michael Soong, who will drive a Honda Civic FD2.

The number of drivers from mainland China competing in this race has decreased to two, which are Pei Liang and Xia Yu from Shanghai RSR Racing. The two rookies who normally compete in the Production Class of the CTCC will drive a pair of Honda Integra DC5.

Despite the majority of the field formed by drivers from the Chinese region, there are a few entries from other parts of Asia, such as Team Endless’ Takashi Kubo, Yoshiaki Inoue and Hideharu Kuroki, also with Filipino driver Don Paster. Both of them will drive locally homologated Honda Integra DC5s, in which guarantees a promising Pan-Asian touring car race.

The qualifying session of the Macau Cup will be held at 13:05 on Friday November 16th, with the race on Saturday at 11:10am MST.
