Martin Tomczyk ‘getting desperate’ to score again

RMG BMW’s Martin Tomczyk has conceded to Autosport, that he is “definitely getting desperate” to score points and win races again.

Tomczyk, who won the 2011 DTM title with Audi, switched to BMW for 2012, but despite being just four points off of eventual title winner, stablemate Bruno Spengler, at last season’s mid point, he has failed to score a point since the Nurburgring last August.

“It’s definitely getting desperate,” said Tomczyk. “I had a very bad run in 2005, but my aims are different now; I’m trying to win races and championships.

“After the way last year ended, you get to the winter, convince yourself that the bad things are over and now you’re starting from zero it will all be OK.

“And then it keeps on happening.”

2013 has proved little better for the 31-year old, after his campaign has been blighted by on-track incidents and penalties; the most notable coming at Brands Hatch in May when he was stripped of pole position for having an underweight car.

During the race, the BMW driver began to advance through the field, but was halted by a collision with Roberto Merhi, which lead to him slam the Mercedes driver for “unsportsmanlike” behaviour in the aftermath.

Tomczyk’s 2013 shocker continued at the Lausitzring last weekend after he qualified 22nd due to a broken splitter, and then during the race, he collided with RMG team-mate, Andy Priaulx.

He eventually finished 19th.

However, as a DTM veteran of 12 seasons, Tomczyk was philosophical about the situation and believes it is part of motor-racing.

“It’s the downside of motorsport. You never know when things will just stop and allow you to enjoy the races again.

“It is like it is at the moment and there doesn’t seem to be anything I can do about it. I just have to live with it and try to do the best I can about it.”
