Triple Eight double pole at Clipsal 500 with Volvo on front row

Triple Eight Race Engineering drivers Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes claimed one pole position each for the first two races of the 2014 V8 Supercars premiere in Adelaide. The real surprise came from Volvo Polestar Racing as Scott McLaughlin secured second position for the second race.

Whincup beat team mate Lowndes by 0.1518 in qualifying for the first race. Mark Winterbottom held the flag high for Ford with third on the grid, closely followed by James Courtney in the Holden Racing Team prepared #22 Commodore.

McLaughlin secured fifth position on the grid for the first race in the new Volvo S60, with last year’s Clipsal 500 pole man Shane Van Gisbergen in sixth.

Lowndes claimed pole position for the second race, with McLaughlin 0.1103 seconds behind. The Volvo driver got in a Triple Eight sandwich with Whincup in third position, a mere 0.0441 seconds behind.

Jason Bright claimed position four on the grid ahead of Ford Performance Racing’s Winterbottom in fifth.

Lee Holdsworth showed promising form for Erebus Motorsport in the Mercedes E63 AMG in sixth position for the second race, with Nissan’s Michael Caruso claiming seventh position.

The first V8 Supercars race of 2014 commences at 16.20 local time tomorrow, with the second one starting at 17.50.
