Second victory in Tasmania for Jamie Whincup

Jamie Whincup claimed his second victory of the V8 Supercars weekend in Tasmania at Symmons Plains. The Holden driver came home first despite hard pressure from Ford driver Mark Winterbottom who crossed the line in second, just half a second behind.

Fabian Coulthard was a lonely third, over two seconds behind the leaders, while Volvo Polestar Racing driver Scott McLaughlin had to fight hard for fourth position.

Craig Lowndes started from the back of the grid after being disqualified from qualifying due to an illegal piece of tape was found on his Holden Commodore. The Triple Eight Race Engineering driver started a furious chase up through the field in the race and passed 20 drivers.

The safety car was issued with just a few laps left as Rick Kelly had been taken out by Ford driver Chaz Mostert, who was penalised for the incident. As the safety car went back into the pits, Lowndes was all over McLaughlin for fourth position. The Volvo driver managed to stay ahead to claim fourth, just 0.2032 seconds ahead of the Holden driver.

Another driver with an impressive charge through the field was James Courtney who was caught out in the chaos of the opening laps. Erebus Motorsport driver Will Davison caused a safety car session after going off into the gravel trap with his Mercedes. Courtney and Robert Dahlgren dropped to the back of the field in that incident, with Courtney later fighting back to eleventh position and Dahlgren to 18th.
