Mattias Ekström lukewarm with Moscow DTM podium

Double DTM champion Mattias Ekström admitted to feeling lukewarm after his third place finish at the fifth round of the 2014 DTM season at the Moscow Raceway.

Despite finishing in the top-three in both free practice sessions on Saturday, the Swede qualified 11th. He then put in a ballsy drive to move through the pack, and on lap 44, he took third from BMW’s Timo Glock.

Ekström remained there until the end of the race to take his third podium of the 2014 DTM season.

While Ekström was pleased with the podium, he admitted to feeling like he is missing holding a winner’s trophy.

“Finishing this race in third place is okay, these are good points,” said Ekström. “However, I’m beginning to feel the loss of holding the ‘big’ trophy.

“Sundays seem to be my days quite often, [and] this was another one of them with plenty of tough fights.”

Following his third podium finish of the year, Ekström moves into second place in the drivers’ standings with 50 points, 20 behind DTM series’ leader Marco Wittmann.

In the maiden DTM race in Russia which took place in 2013, Ekström finished second behind Audi stablemate Mike Rockenfeller.
