Lea Wood confident of making Silverstone grid

Lea Wood says he is “confident” his team can carry out the huge repairs needed to his Toyota Avensis to get him on the grid at Silverstone at the end of the month.

The JWT Performance driver was involved in a huge accident in the first race at Rockingham on Sunday, after a tap from Aiden Moffat sent him careering off the track backwards, and into Warren Scott at unabated speed.

The accident wrote off the entire back end of the Avensis, and put Wood out of the remainder of the day’s action. And it was a case of contrasting emotions on a track where the 30-year-old wrapped up the inaugural Jack Sears Trophy last year.

Wood said: “We were gutted to say the least but you have to look at the bigger picture and get ready for Silverstone and we started trying to get it sorted straight after the race.

“There is a lot of work to do – we have to cut the rear of the car off and get a new one on – but my engineer and the rest of the team are great and I’m confident we will get it sorted.”

Looking back on the accident, Wood added: “We got spun around in turn two off the exit to turn one which you come out of at huge speeds.

“We had a tap on the rear quarter which spun me around and straight into Warren Scott so we wrote the back of the car off completely.

“The immediate thoughts were to look into repairing it for races two and three but the officials looked at it and said it was too dangerous so we needed to get back into the workshop and stripped out.”
