Scott McLaughlin claims eighth pole of 2014 at Gold Coast

Scott McLaughlin claimed his eighth V8 Supercars pole position of 2014 for Volvo Polestar Racing in the final Gold Coast qualifying session, beating Jamie Whincup on his very last lap.

McLaughlin held pole early on in the session but dropped to fourth position as Whincup, Craig Lowndes and Shane Van Gisbergen improved their times towards the end of the session. But McLaughlin got back on his last lap to beat Whincup by 0.1250 seconds.

Whincup’s Triple Eight Race Engineering team mate Lowndes secured third position with yesterday’s race winner Van Gisbergen in fourth.

Will Davison secured a strong fifth on the grid for Mercedes team Erebus Motorsport, right ahead of the top Ford and Nissan drivers in the form of David Reynolds in sixth position and James Moffat in seventh position.

Tim Slade, Chaz Mostert and James Courtney rounded off the top ten, while a disappointed Mark Winterbottom will start 13th behind Garth Tander and Michael Caruso in eleventh and 12th position respectively.
