Jamie Whincup takes record sixth V8 Supercars title with Phillip Island win

Jamie Whincup secured a record breaking sixth V8 Supercars title after a dominating victory in the second Phillip Island race ahead of Triple Eight Race Engineering team mate Craig Lowndes in second place.

”It is all a bit emotional at the moment, but I am still focused on the race tomorrow and the finale in Sydney,” said Whincup.

Ford Performance Racing’s Mark Winterbottom got the jump on Whincup in the start and held the lead for the first couple of laps. But it was not long until Whincup managed to get past as Winterbottom made a small mistake and Lowndes followed past a couple of laps later.

”These two (Whincup and Lowndes) are too quick. We need to go back and have a look. I got a lot of grass in the first race and a trophy in this one, so not too bad,” said Winterbottom who still holds on to second in the championship.

Garth Tander fought his way from eighth on the grid to finish fourth for Holden Racing Team, gaining on Winterbottom towards the end of the race but was not close enough for an attack.

There was plenty of action behind him as three Nissans fought one Volvo for fifth position. Todd Kelly managed to secure fifth despite hard pressure from race one winner Scott McLaughlin in sixth towards the end of the race.

The Nissan Motorsport duo of Michael Caruso and Rick Kelly finished seventh and eighth respectively, while Chaz Mostert and Nick Percat rounded off the top ten.

The Phillip Island 400 weekend continues tomorrow with a final qualifying session and race.
