Gothenburg STCC race cancelled

The Scandinavian Touring Car Championship round at the city circuit in Gothenburg has been cancelled due to a clashing event at the arena.
”It is unfortunately not possible to clear the circuit area in time and there is no other available date to host the STCC race,” said Thomas Lindskog, managing director for Gothenburg City Arena.

The Volvo Ocean Race sailing event is going to be held at the City Arena facilities a shot time after the planned STCC race and the area needs to be cleared of spectator stands, guard rails, containers and more in time for that.

The STCC organisation is currently finalising the details to secure a replacement circuit for the Gothenburg round.

”We have evaluated the possibilities to find a new date for the Gothenburg race, but unfortunately not found a solution. It is a sad decision, but we would like to extend our gratitude to the Gothenburg City Arena organisation for many years of great racing. We are going to reveal a replacement for the Gothenburg race within a couple of days,” said Jonas Lundin, managing director of STCC AB.

2015 was supposed to be the last year for the STCC race as the area of the racing circuit is going to be repurposed for apartment buildings by the Gothenburg municipality. The arena has hosted STCC races since 2008.

”We have had a great time since 2008 when we established a new visitor record of 38.000 spectators that still stands today. We are proud to have been able to offer the motorsport crowd a unique experience right in the center of the home town of Volvo,” said Lindskog.
