DTM drivers choose their own race numbers for 2015

Following on from Formula 1’s adoption of a driver-driven car numbering system introduced last year, and with similar systems having been in place in other major touring car championships for a while, the DTM has now allowed its competitors to choose their own race number from this year onwards.

In previous years, the DTM system has shadowed the Formula 1 system which had been in use since 1996, with the championship winning driver being given the #1 for the following season and his team-mate the #2, while the following pairings of numbers have all followed in the order of the teams’ championship results.

This year, Marco Wittmann will compete with #1 as the reigning champion, while series’ stalwart Gary Paffett has opted for #2, with his British compatriot Paul di Resta snatching up #3.

Two-time champion Mattias Ekström has chosen #5, while the field have continued to select values all the way up to #99, which will be on the Audi RS 5 of 2013 champion Mike Rockenfeller, with #94 by HWA Mercedes-Benz driver Pascal Wehrlein, reflecting the year of the 20-year-old’s birth.
