Jamie Whincup takes first two V8 Supercars pole positions of 2015

Reigning champion Jamie Whincup has claimed pole position for the first two V8 Supercars races of the year at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide, breaking the qualifying record from last year by over three tenths of a second. The Triple Eight Race Engineering driver beat Fabian Coulthard with three tenths in the first session and Scott McLaughlin in the second session by the same amount of time.

Volvo Polestar Racing driver McLaughlin was third fastest in the first qualifying run, with Chaz Mostert, who topped the pre-season test day, in fourth position as the top Ford Falcon FG X driver, six tenths behind Whincup’s time.

Holden Racing Team driver James Courtney rounded off the top five, while Michael Caruso was fastest of the Nissan Motorsport drivers in sixth position, 0.7647 seconds from the top spot.

The second qualifying session saw McLaughlin being a bit closer to Whincup compared to Coulthard in the first session, with the gap being 0.2843 seconds.

Courtney improved his times in the second session as well in third position, 0.3071 seconds from Whincup. Coulthard claimed position four while Tekno Autosports driver Shane Van Gisbergen was fifth fastest, 0.4711 seconds from pole position.

David Reynolds claimed grid position six in his older specification Ford Falcon FG, with Craig Lowndes in seventh position.

The Erebus Motorsport drivers had two tough qualifying sessions with Will Davison 18th in the first session and Ash Walsh 15th in the second session.
