Team BMR line-up provides “perfect opportunity” for Aron Smith

Aron Smith believes that his new all-star team-mates will provide him the “perfect opportunity” to prove himself in the 2015 British Touring Car Championship.

Staying at Team BMR for another season, Smith will be joined by team owner Warren Scott and Colin Turkington and Jason Plato, who finished first and second in the 2014 standings respectively. Smith is not intimidated by his new team-mates, however, as he looks to prove himself against the very best the series has to offer.

“I think it’s a perfect opportunity for me, you always want to be pitted against the best, and these are the best in the business,” Smith told TouringCarTimes. “I think we can do the job, I’m under no false illusions that these guys are the best, and I really have to up my game to be even on par with them but I think we can do it.”

One slight advantage that Smith has over his new team-mates is the experience of driving the Volkswagen CC throughout the 2014 season, while Plato comes from three years with MG and Turkington leaves behind years of driving rear-wheel-drive machinery.

“It is and it isn’t [an advantage],” continued Smith. “They’re professionals, they like to play it down, but they’re good in anything. I think that experience won’t really separate me from them, but actual pace will hopefully do the job. However, having them in the team has already helped, the wealth of knowledge that they bring to the team is invaluable, so I think the whole platform is going to get better and better.”

When it comes to predicting how his season will go, Smith was confident that results would come, but acknowledged that it won’t be an easy job by any means.

“I would say I want to obliterate the field, but everyone wants that. I just want three good finishes to set me up for the year. It’s not a knowing you’re going to win every race it’s making the most of what you can. I’ll just do the best job I can at Brands Hatch.”
