More DRS and less tyres for 2015 DTM

With just over five weeks to go before the beginning of the 2015 season, ITR e.V., promoter of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, has released more details about the changes in technical regulations, aimed to increase the show for spectators.

The series’ promoter has already released the details of the new racing weekend format, featuring two races with separate, 20-minute, qualifying sessions for each race, awarding full points to both of them.

With the option tyres being scrapped for this year, all the weekend action will be contested on a single compound provided by the series’ official tyre supplier Hankook. Today ITR announced that each driver will only have four sets of tyres for both races and qualifying sessions, increasing the need for an efficient management by the teams.

In order to increase the number of overtaking manoeuvres, the use of the DRS (Drag Reduction System) has been extended to three times per lap, available as long as the gap to the competitor ahead is less than two seconds at the start/finish line.  The rear wing will also drop a bit lower, going to a 16-degree angle, in order to achieve higher speeds in the DRS zones.

Hans Werner Aufrecht, Chairman of ITR e.V., has set spectator enjoyment as crucial for this season: “Providing the spectators enthralling motor racing and top-class entertainment represents our top priority. To do so, spectacular overtaking manoeuvres on the track and thrilling races up to the final lap are a must, and that’s exactly what DTM has been providing for many years.”

The 2015 DTM season gets underway at Hockenheim on the 2-3 of May.
