Audi delighted with triple championship lead

Audi Sport has started the 2015 DTM season in the best way possible, achieving pole position and race win on Saturday and Sunday and leaving Hockenheim in the lead of all three championship tables.

Mattias Ekström had a strong victory today in the race after a breath taking duel with reigning champion Marco Wittmann. Still, the race wasn’t easy, as it started in dry conditions, with the rain making an appearance after 20 minutes.

The Swede celebrated his 20th victory in the DTM today, with a strong positive feeling over after a difficult race: “Today was fun from the first to the last lap. My Audi RS 5 DTM was perfect. We pitted one lap too late for the tire change but that wasn’t so important because my car was so good. The conditions were very difficult today and that’s when the experience of the old hands pays off.”

Edoardo Mortara was second to complete a 1-2 finish for the Ingolstadt manufacturer. He led after the pit stop for wet tyres, but allowed Ekström to overtake when he saw the Swede had more speed.

Pole position man Mike Rockenfeller didn’t have a good setup for the really wet conditions, so he couldn’t challenge for the podium. In the end, the 2013 champion was sixth in the race.

Dieter Gass, Head of DTM, was pleased to round off a perfect weekend: “We had the fastest car both on a dry and a wet track and we clinched two poles and two victories on Sunday, even a one-two. We’re the front runners in all three classifications, even heading the drivers’ standings with three drivers. You could hardly wish for more.””

Edoardo Mortara, Team Rosberg and Audi leave Hockenheim on top of their respective Drivers’, Teams’ and Manufacturers’ championships.
