Mark Winterbottom heads Rick Kelly to victory

Prodrive Racing Australia driver Mark Winterbottom won the second V8 Supercars race at Winton ahead of Nissan Motorsport’s Rick Kelly.

Winterbottom started second behind team mate and pole sitter Chaz Mostert but was in first place coming into the first corner. Kelly managed to slip past Mostert into turn one as well, setting the first three positions for the remainder of the race with Mostert finishing third in the end.

There was drama in the first corner as Holden Racing Team colleagues Garth Tander and James Courtney made contact. Courtney out braked him self and pushed Tander off track, resulting in a drive through penalty for Courtney and a retired race for Tander.

The incident also eliminated Lee Holdsworth, with Andre Heimgartner being tapped into a spin a corner later, but was able to rejoin the race.

After the commotion on lap one, the field settled down and remained, just as in the first race, more or less stationary for the rest of the race.

David Reynolds claimed fourth position, setting the fastest lap of the race, with Shane Van Gisbergen in fifth ahead of reigning champion Jamie Whincup in sixth.

Erebus Motorsport driver Will Davison claimed seventh despite hard pressure from championship leader Craig Lowndes throughout the entire race. Volvo Polestar Racing’s Scott McLaughlin finished ninth with Michael Caruso as the final driver in the top ten for Nissan Motorsport.

The V8 Supercars weekend in Winton continues tomorrow with a final race.
