Andy Yan takes CTCC victory in Shanghai

Andy Yan took victory at the Shanghai Tianma Circuit for Chang’an Ford FRD Racing, narrowly beating the Kia K3S of Jason Zhang Zhi Qiang of Kia Racing.

Yan took to the lead from the start, with his Ford Focus beating Zhang off the line. However, the race was neutralised after just four laps following a major incident involving Po Shi, He Zi Xian and Chen Xu.

Following the safety car period, Zhang, who had fallen down to fourth, began to fight back, passing the Kias of Jim Ka To and Leo Yi Hong Li to work his way back in to second position. Leo Yi had a terrible end to the race, dropping from third down to eighth at the finish line, surrendering the final podium position to Yan’s teammate Rainey He.

Despite closing in to within a second of Yan, Zhang could not match the Ford driver, having to settle for second at the drop of the flag.

There were retirements for Darryl O’Young, whose engine overheated during the safety car period. Meanwhile Dong Feng Honda Racing saw two of their cars out, with Martin Xie unable to take to the grid with engine troubles and Harry Ho spinning out following contact with Larry Lin Le Feng.

Zheng Zhen Dong took victory in the Super Production Cup category, leading home a VW 333 1-2-3 with Wang Rue and Jiang Tengyi rounding out the podium positions. There could have been a 1-2-3-4 result for the VW 333 squad, but Han Han found himself retiring from the lead with engine problems on lap two. Sunny Wong was the only other car to finish on the lead lap in his Citroen C-Elysee.
