Mark Winterbottom beats Craig Lowndes to fourth straight win

Ford driver Mark Winterbottom claimed his fourth straight V8 Supercars victory in the second race at Queensland Raceway, beating pole sitter Craig Lowndes.

Winterbottom got past Lowndes in turn two as the Holden driver ran slightly wide. From then on there was no stopping the Prodrive Racing Australia driver. Lowndes was close, but never close enough to seriously challenge for the lead despite setting the fastest lap of the race.

Rod Nash Racing driver David Reynolds was third initially but let Ford colleague Chaz Mostert past, with the duo finishing third and fourth in the end.

Reigning champion Jamie Whincup made a strong start from eighth on the grid to fight his way up to fifth position. The Triple Eight Race Engineering driver closed in on Reynolds towards the end of the race but was not able to get past.

Todd Kelly claimed sixth position for Nissan Motorsport with Will Davison in seventh and James Courtney in eighth.

Volvo driver Scott McLaughlin started fourth but made a slow getaway and ran wide in first couple of corners, dropping down to finish ninth ahead of Scott Pye.

Shane Van Gisbergen had his first retirement since 2013 after suffering from transmission issues while lining up on the grid.

Winterbottom has extended his lead to 1615 points, with Lowndes in second place on 1350 and Mostert third on 1302. The V8 Supercars action at Queensland Raceway continues tomorrow with a final race.
