Mattias Ekström loses three positions for tomorrow’s grid

Mattias Ekström has been handed a penalty after being found responsible for his collision with Timo Glock. The Swede will face a three-place grid drop for tomorrow’s Race 2.

It was lap 11, shortly after the race had been restarted after the first safety car period. BMW’s Timo Glock was fourth, followed by Audi’s Mattias Ekström. The German slid under braking, with the Swede closing in.

Ekström went for the gap when Glock was already taking the corner. They both collided, crashing into the tyre barriers and ending the race with heavy damage to their cars, what caused another safety car intervention.

The stewards have found Ekström responsible for the incident, and the Swede will drop three places on the grid from his qualifying result.

The no points finish, together with Pascal Wehrlein’s win, has caused Ekström to drop to second place in the standings, now eight points behind the Mercedes driver.
