Mike Rockenfeller takes pole position for Race 2 in Moscow

Audi Sport was on top in the qualifying session for this afternoon’s Race 2 at the Moscow Raceway, host of the sixth round of the 2015 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season. Mike Rockenfeller was fastest to achieve pole position, the sixth of his DTM career.

The session started with the BMW showing strong pace. Timo Glock, Bruno Spengler and Tom Blomqvist topped the classification in quick succession. The only incident of the session happened when the Briton spun right in front of team-mate Martin Tomczyk. He managed to recover and continue.

Marco Wittmann would then go fastest, but he was quickly demoted by Mattias Ekström, who set the fastest time before the end of the first stint. After a tyre change and some adjustments, the drivers headed to the track for their final runs.

Rockenfeller put himself on top of the timing charts with just five minutes to the end of the session, with a lap time of 1:28.540. Mattias Ekström was second, just 0.038 seconds off his team-mate’s time, but will drop to fifth due to the penalty for yesterday’s collision with Timo Glock.

Bruno Spengler was third, just 0.040 seconds behind Rocky. He was followed by fellow BMW driver Maxime Martin, a further 0.007 seconds away. Next were the Audi pair of by Jamie Green and Nico Müller, who clocked exactly the same time, 0.052 seconds off the pace.

Gary Paffett was the best Mercedes driver in seventh place. The BMW contingent formed by Tom Blomqvist, Augusto Farfus and Marco Wittmann completed the top 10, which was within a distance of just 0.146 seconds.

Standings leader Pascal Wehrlein was 11th, 0.199 seconds behind Rockenfeller. Team mate at Mercedes Christian Vietoris, whose car was very badly damaged yesterday, could only be 23rd.

The start of Race 2 is scheduled for 15:10 CEST (GMT + 2) and will run for 60 minutes plus one lap, with one compulsory pit stop to be made.
