BMW leaves Nürburgring as manufacturers’ standings leader

BMW Motorsport had an easier than anticipated weekend at the Nürburgring for the eighth round of the 2015 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season. The Bavarian squad won Saturday’s race and got Bruno Spengler to the podium today. The effort translates in BMW staying at the top of the manufacturers’ table.

Few would have guessed some races ago that BMW would become the benchmark manufacturer this season, after the outfit struggled first with the new standard tyres and then with a general lack of pace. All that seems, however, to have change since the tests after the Spielberg race.

BMW had a strong weekend at Oschersleben two weeks ago, thus gaining performance weights for this round, and anticipating a struggle for pace. It wasn’t the case, with Maxime Martin winning on Saturday and with four M4 DTMs getting into the points.

Jens Marquardt, BMW Motorsport Director, was pleased with the new level of performance found by his men: “After yesterday’s win, we were able to pick up further valuable points today. Bruno Spengler made it onto the podium thanks to a strong performance, and Tom Blomqvist’s fourth place is also a very good result. Augusto Farfus and Martin Tomczyk also made it into the points. We can be very happy with today’s results since our rivals were just that little bit stronger overall. Martin Tomczyk delivered a sensational race. Starting from the back of the grid and finishing in the points is something that only a few of the DTM drivers are capable of. The weekend went well for us overall, we head to Hockenheim leading the manufacturers’ championship. That is a great feeling.”

BMW Motorsport now has 554 in the Manufacturers’ table, 51 more than Mercedes AMG and 82 over Audi Sport.

The season finale takes place at Hockenheim in three weeks’ time.
