Colin Turkington: “It’s a long shot, but I’ve got a chance”

A trio of strong results left Colin Turkington just 32 points off the top of the Drivers’ standings going in to the Brands Hatch finale, although the reigning champion admits it won’t be easy.

Turkington took fifth and eighth in the opening two races while team-mate Jason Plato struggled with a puncture in the opening race. A dominant drive from Turkington saw him stroke his Team BMR Volkswagen CC home to victory from third on the reverse grid.

“Chuffed to bits actually,” Turkington told TouringCarTimes. “We haven’t had the fastest car today up until race three but as usual we kept grafting away and really turned a corner in that last race. I had wanted to cut the gap to Gordon more than I did but it wasn’t for the lack of trying. We still go to Brands fighting hard and we’ll have to see what happens.”

During the third race of the day at Silverstone, Turkington was able to comfortably drive to victory as the rest of the field battled behind him, led by the West Surrey Racing pairing of Rob Collard and Sam Tordoff.

“I was happier seeing the BMWs there than the Honda,” said Turkington, referring to championship leading Gordon Shedden, who carries a 23 point lead over Plato and 32 points over Turkington in to Brands Hatch.

“I have many, many happy memories from Brands winning two titles there,” concluded Turkington. “We’ll go and keep working hard, it’s a long shot but I’ve still got a chance.”
