Two wins from two races for Scott McLaughlin

Scott McLaughlin made it two out of two wins for Garry Rogers Motorsport in the V8 Supercars weekend at Phillip Island, again starting from pole position and winning in style, this time ahead of Ford’s Mark Winterbottom.

The young Kiwi got a late race challenge as the safety car was brought out with ten laps left to clean debris following a puncture of Cameron Waters.

Triple Eight Race Engineering driver Jamie Whincup was right on the rear bumper of McLaughlin at the restart, but made a mistake as the race resumed, dropping down to fourth position.

That handed second place to reigning champion Winterbottom, who made his way past not only Whincup but also fellow Ford driver Scott Pye who finished third.

Triple Eight’s Craig Lowndes finished fifth ahead of the top Nissan Motorsport driver of Michael Caruso, crossing the line in sixth position ahead of Holden Racing Team’s James Courtney.

Chaz Mostert fought his way back up to eighth position in the Prodrive Ford after being turned around by Holden’s Garth Tander on the first lap, leaving him dead last.

McLaughlin’s double victory has brought him up to second place in the drivers’ championship, 15 points behind Whincup who heads the table.
