Thed Björk scores best WTCC result and then rushes home to become a father

The two Polestar Cyan Racing drivers Fredrik Ekblom and Thed Björk raced to fourth place in the two WTCC races on Sunday at the Hungaroring, scoring their personal best results and matching Robert Dahlgren’s best result for Volvo in Oschersleben 2011. Björk then left the circuit straight after the race to be with his wife who had gone into labour earlier that day, coming home to a new baby boy.

Björk had taken the S60’s best qualifying result with fifth on Saturday, and managed to go one place better in the race, fighting with Honda’s Tiago Monteiro during the final laps and almost managed to score the Swedish marque’s first ever podium in the WTCC.

“I had an awesome race,” said Björk. “I missed testing on Friday, had to start last in the first race and then had to fight an extremely slippery track. To crown the weekend by being so close to a podium finish feels very rewarding, but now I am going to go home and become a father.”

The team organised an earlier departure for the 35-year-old, who caught the next flight home to join his wife Cecilia.

“After a good weekend in Hungary the team helped me prepare a bike and a car waiting outside so I could catch the first flight home,” posted Björk on his social media account. “My wife was in labour and I got home to a beautiful boy. Thank you Cyan Racing, Volvo and Polestar for a great weekend and above all for your commitment in bringing me home as fast as possible!”
