Heiko Hammel wins the first race of the weekend at the Sachsenring

Wolf Racing’s Heiko Hammel won the third round of the 2016 DTC season at the Sachsenring, and takes the lead of the championship from Besaplast Racing’s Fredrik Lestrup, with the Swede finishing third in his MINI John Cooper Works, almost ten seconds behind the race winner.

Hammel and qualified on pole position in the Super Production class in his Ford Fiesta ST, and converted that pole into his first race win of the season, while Lestrup had qualified in fifth, and worked his way forwards to third, but that wasn’t enough to stop Hammel overturning his championship lead.

Hammel’s win was narrowly ahead of Swiss driver Milenko Vukovic, who crossed the line less than four-tenths of a second behind in his Audi A3.

In the Production 2 class, victory went to HTF Motorsport’s Kevin Metzner in the Volkswagen Scirocco, while Markus Spitzenberger took his first win in the Production 1 class in the IMC Motorsport MINI, crossing the line less than a tenth of a second ahead of Dirk Lauth’s MINI.

The second race of the weekend takes place at 16:30 on Sunday, with a separate qualifying session at 08:00 CET.
