Ash Sutton: “I can’t see why Thruxton was our bogey track”

Ashley Sutton was pleased with the overall result of his Thruxton weekend, despite ending race one in the barrier and being spun around in race two.

The Triple Eight Racing driver knew going in to the weekend that the nature of the Thruxton circuit was not expecting to suit the MG6’s characteristics. However, only outside interference stopped the Jack Sears Trophy leader from three respectable results.

A coming together in race one following the field bunching up saw Sutton end his race in the tyre barrier at Seagrave, resulting in a 27th place grid slot in race two. A strong recovery drive seemed to be on the cards for the rookie before being spun around and dropping back down the order and having to settle for a point. Another charging drive in race three saw Sutton end the race in the top five, showing once again that he’s certainly one to watch in the future.

“A good weekend in the end,” Sutton told TouringCarTimes. “It wasn’t ideal don’t get me wrong. Race one we ended in the tyre barrier, no-ones fault just a racing incident, wrong place wrong time. Race two again the car came from 27th to 12th in 8 laps and I was happy with the car and then we got turned around by Austin and that dropped us down to 16th and we finished 15th, it was a point at the end of the day, damage limitation.

“Race three was great, showed great pace in the car considering this was one of our bogey tracks. I can’t see why it was our bogey track, the car showed great pace.”

Sutton still leads the Jack Sears Trophy, despite being outscored across the weekend for the first time this season, and currently sits in ninth place in the overall championship, four points ahead of team-mate Josh Cook.
