Jiang Tengyi scores the first win for the new Volkswagen Lamando

Jiang Tengyi won the second round of the 2016 China Touring Car Championship at the Nanjing Wantrack Circuit on Sunday, leading a Shanghai VW 333 Racing 1-2 in the Super Cup 2.0T class ahead of team-mate Zhang Zhen Dong.

Starting from pole position on the reversed grid, as the CTCC has adopted the popular European-style format for this season, Jiang and Zhang led the race from the start ahead of Alex Hui’s Teamwork Citroën during the early stages.

The safety car was called early on after Changan Ford FRD driver Dan Wells crashed out, then the Ford team suffered more drama as Race 1 winner Andy Yan spun out when the race resumed on lap five.

Hui’s Citroën suffered from mechanical failure on lap six, while Ford’s Martin Caro hit trouble on lap seven in an incident which caused a second safety car intervention.

Han Han was now up to third for Volkswagen, with the German manufacturer set for a 1-2-3 result, but spun into the gravel on lap 16, promoting the Ford of Rainey He onto the final place of the podium.

Rainey He and Andy Yan are now both leading the drivers’ championship with 20 points each, two ahead of Volkswagen’s Jiang Tengyi, while Changan Ford FRD Team leads the manufacturers’ championship on 42 points, eight ahead of Volkswagen.

In the Super Cup 1.6T class, Honda won with their new Civic FC, with Martin Xie securing victory ahead of the Kias of Jason Zhang and Jim Ka To.

With only six cars finishing the first race, just the top six were reversed, placing Xie fourth on the grid, but he was up to second at the start splitting his two Honda team-mates, with the Japanese marque holding the first three spots in the early stages. Xie overtook team-mate Zou Si Rui for the lead on lap seven, while the Kias which finished 1-2 in Race 1 picked off the other Hondas to complete the podium.

The second round of the 2016 CTCC will be held on June 5th at the Zhuhai International Circuit.
