The battle for the title heats up in Lausitzring

The third round of the 2016 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season, held this weekend at the Lausitzring, delivered hot action, and not only because of the air temperatures. Robert Wickens and BMW Motorsport lead the standings with one third of the season already completed.

The races at the track located Southeast of Berlin delivered, with Audi’s Miguel Molina and Mercedes AMG’s Lucas Auer, the fifth and sixth different winners in the six races held so far this season, a mark of the level of competition seen in the Series.

However, it was Robert Wickens who, with two third place results, left the Lausitzring as the new standings leader, with a total of 58 points, three more than BMW Motorsport driver Marco Wittmann. Mattias Ekström is third for Audi Sport with 46. Jamie Green also climbed up to fourth place, counting 45 points, with Edoardo Mortara just one point behind the Briton.

Paul Di Resta, who had been leading the standings right before this weekend, had a difficult third round, not scoring any points. The Mercedes AMG Team HWA driver lies now sixth.

BMW Team RMG, home to Marco Wittmann and Timo Glock, continues to lead the Teams’ table with 93 points, three more than Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline, lining up Mattias Ekström and Edoardo Mortara.

The Mercedes AMG Team HWA I, who manages the C63 DTMs of Robert Wickens and Daniel Juncadella, is the best placed formation for the three-point star manufacturer in fourth position, with 58 points.

BMW Motorsport continues to lead the Manufacturers’ standings, after a better-than-expected weekend at the Lausitzring. The Bavarian squad accrues 228 points, 30 more than Audi Sport, which was the highest scoring manufacturer this weekend.

Mercedes AMG also recovered some ground in the classification, remaining in third position with 180 points.

Next round of the 2016 DTM season takes place at the Norisring, from the 24th to the 26th of June.
