Robert Dahlgren has no regrets about losing potential STCC title for WTCC drive

Robert Dahlgren made his first World Touring Car Championship appearance last weekend in Vila Real since Macau 2011, and will continue to race for Polestar Cyan Racing for the remainder of the WTCC season, which almost rules out any chance of him winning his first ever STCC title later this year.

Dahlgren made his Scandinavian Touring Car Championship return earlier this year with Volvo, and has won two races from the first six with three second-place finishes, and currently leads the drivers’ stadings by ten points over team-mate Richard Göransson.

As a result, he is in the frame to win his first STCC drivers’ title in his ninth full season in the championship, but due to clashes in the WTCC and STCC calendar for the last two rounds of the STCC season, the 36-year-old will relinquish his seat at Solvalla and Knutstorp, in all likelihood ending his title chances in a competitive season.

“I want to do both, but I’ve checked the flights but they’re a bit long to go in-between,” joked Dahlgren to TouringCarTimes.

“In STCC I have really good speed and would like to win the championship, but since I was 13 I’ve always dreamt about being world champion one day, and this is the way to be world champion,” he said.

“That is the target, that’s what we’re aiming for, so we need to do everything we can to achieve it, so if that means it costs me an STCC title, that’s OK.”
