Shane van Gisbergen claims last-lap win from Jamie Whincup

Shane van Gisbergen came out on top in a three-car internal Triple Eight Race Engineering fight for the lead, passing team-mate Jamie Whincup on the very last lap of the first race at Queensland Raceway.

Whincup started third but made his way into the lead early on, passing shock pole sitter Chris Pither and Chaz Mostert on the first lap.

Team-mate Craig Lowndes was involved in the fight for the lead to the very end as well, but making a mistake four laps from the end, locking his brakes up that allowed for Van Gisbergen to sneak past.

Van Gisbergen then ran a different strategy to Whincup, who was first to choose strategy, and was able to take advantage of better tyres to pass his Triple Eight Race Engineering team-mate with just one lap left of the race.

Whinchp had to settle for second, remaining on 99 V8 Supercars victories, ahead of Lowndes in third, while reigning champion and Ford driver Mark Winterbottom claimed fourth ahead of Prodrive Racing Australia team-mate Chaz Mostert in fifth.

Tim Slade made his way from ninth on the grid in his Holden Commodore to finish sixth, being the last driver of the field to complete his pit stop.

Will Davison, Tekno Autosports, and Rick Kelly, Nissan Motorsport, rounded off the top eight. James Moffat was best of the Volvo drivers in ninth while team mate Scott McLaughlin only managed 15th and drops further behind the leaders of the championship.

The start of the race was delayed as Cameron Waters stopped on the circuit due to a drivetrain issue.

Scott Pye crossed the line in 21st position despite a massive crash in practice that forced DJR Team Penske to race against the clock to repair his Ford Falcon in time.

Whincup remains in the championship lead with Van Gisbergen 41 points behind and Winterbottom third, 93 points behind.
