Andy Yan leads Ford 1-2 as Citroën falters on final lap

Andy Yan won the second Super Cup 2.0T race at the Guandong International Circuit ahead of Changan Ford FRD team-mate Martin Cao, as Teamwork’s Sunny Wong retired from the lead on the final lap.

Zheng Zhen Dong started from pole position as a result of the top eight reversed grid, was passed by the Ford of Andy Yan at the start and then made contact with the other Ford Focus of Martin Cao and was forced to retire on lap two.

Teamwork Motorsport’s Alex Hui and Sunny Wong were making quick progress from the reversed grid and were up to fourth and fifth by lap two.

Wong progressed up into third on lap five after team-mate Hui had an incident with the Ford of Rainey He, and went on to pass Martin Cao and Andy Yan on the seventh lap to take the lead of the race, while Hui was now in fourth position.

The safety car was deployed o lap nine after BAIC Senova’s Juan Carlos Zhu spun at the final corner and championship Rainey He went off into the gravel. The Teamwork Motorsport Citroen C-Elysees then slowed down on lap 12 and retired from the race, thus promoting Yan to victory with Martin Cao and Volkswagen’s Lo Ka Chun completing the podium.

In the Super Cup 1.6T race, Leo Yi Hong Li led a Kia 1-2-3 in race which was briefly held behind the safety car after an incident between the Kia of Larry Lin and Honda’s Zou Si Rui at the start.

Martin Xie went on to finish fourth, passing team-mate Henry Ho at the end of the race and maintains his championship lead which is now down to seven points over Jason Zhang.

In the Super Cup 2.0T class, Rainey He leads the championship by seven points over Martin Cao, with Andy Yan just one point further behind, with Volkswagen’s Zhang Zhen Dong in fourth, a further 12 behind.

The next round of the CTCC will be held at the Shanghai International Circuit on September 25th, as a support race for the WTCC Race of China.
