Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell on Sandown 500 pole position

The Triple Eight Race Engineering duo of Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell claimed pole position for tomorrow’s Sandown 500 race after winning the two qualifying races today.

Dumbrell started second in the first co-driver only qualifying race, beating pole sitter Steve Owen in the sprint to the first corner. The Holden driver held the lead for the entire race, winning by close to eight seconds over Ford driver Owen.

There was a hard fight for third place between DJR Team Penske driver Luke Youlden, Holden Racing Team driver Warren Luff and Tekno Autosports driver Jonathon Webb. Youlden held third until the second to last lap when Luff managed to get past and Webb followed through.

The Volvo duo of David Wall and James Golding crossed the line in sixth and seventh position respectively ahead of former Volvo driver Alexandre Prémat in eighth for Triple Eight Race Engineering.

The finishing order of the first qualifying race determined the grid for the second qualifying race, with Whincup heading this race from lights to flag.

The positions behind him changed compared to the first race, with Holden Racing Team driver Garth Tander fighting his way from third to second, finishing just over one second behind Whincup.

The Volvo duo of Scott McLaughlin and James Moffat made progress as well, claiming positions three and four to lock out the second row for the main race tomorrow.

But they got their positions thanks to an incident between Fabian Coulthard and Shane van Gisbergen, with the Ford driver being pushed off track by the Holden driver. Coulthard finished eleventh after an incident with Will Davison while Van Gisbergen crossed the line in seventh.

Chaz Mostert fought his way up to fifth position after a mistake earlier in the race, with Holden Racing Team driver James Courtney finishing sixth.

Super Black Racing driver Chris Pither was disqualified from 24th position due to a breach of the minimum tyre pressure rule.
