Dieter Gass: “We are all behind Edo Mortara now”

Audi Sport will support Edoardo Mortara in the fight for the title in the remaining races of the season, with the manufacturer’s full focus on helping the Italian catch BMW’s Marco Wittmann.

Edoardo Mortara is second in the standings, 33 points behind, and Audi look set for a strong weekend in Hungary, with the Team Abt driver fastest in yesterday’s FP1, and second in FP2.

“We are all behind Edoardo Mortara now,” said Dieter Gass, Head of DTM for Audi to TouringCarTimes. “We are in the fight for the three championships and we want to win.”

Jamie Green still has a mathematical chance, albeit a slim one, 51 points behind Wittmann. Asked whether the Briton would get any support from Audi, Gass said: “Of course, if Jamie was to win and cut the gap to Wittmann, we would help him. But that would have to be very soon, as there are only four races left.”

The Audi RS 5 DTMs arrive in Hungary as the lightest cars of the field, an advantage they haven’t been able to transform into results in recent races.

“The Hungaroring’s layout suits us, I think this track will help us. Overtaking is really difficult here, so qualifying will be crucial” added Gass.

Asked if they had an specific strategy for qualifying, Dieter Gass said: “I think there are two-tenths in the tyres we don’t use in qualifying in order to be in better condition for the race. We have to look at perhaps having a more aggressive setup to be faster and start the race up front.”
