Superlicense system to be introduced for 2017 Supercars

The Supercars organisation is going to introduce a ”CAMS Superlicense” from 2017, similar to the one used in Formula 1.

New drivers to the championship, current drivers excepted, must get 13 points from national racing before being given a Superlicense.

“Given that Supercars were recently included to the FIA Super Licence structure by the World Motor Sport Council, it was appropriate for CAMS to follow suit and implement a similar structure locally,” said Michael Smith, CAMS General Manager of Motor Sport.

“Locally, CAMS has observed an increase in the number of young and inexperienced drivers racing powerful machinery in advanced categories of motor sport. Along with Supercars, we have raised concerns of a heightened level of risk. The CAMS Superlicence is intended to maintain the highest safety and driving standards across our sport.”

Co-drivers for the endurance races will have to have raced in three Supercars races in the last five years or at least have a FIA Gold driver rating.

Criteria to qualify for a CAMS Superlicense:

Hold an International Circuit C Racing Licence
Be 17 years of age or older
Accumulate a minimum of 13 CAMS/FIA Super Licence points five years prior
Or have competed in a minimum of three VASC rounds in the last five years
Or a hold a minimum of a Gold FIA Driver Categorisation
