Triple Eight continue Bathurst appeal, CAMS say result is still provisional

Triple Eight Race Engineering have continued with their appeal against their race-losing penalty at last weekend’s Bathurst 1000, with the Australian ASN CAMS confirming that the race result may still yet be changed.

The championship organisers had stated that the penalty could only be altered from 15 seconds to 10 seconds following CAMS’ decision not to allow Triple Eight to change their grounds for appeal to one contesting the imposition of the penalty rather than the severity. The Australian sporting authority has now clarified that they can adjust the penalty, which may yet see Triple Eight pair Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell awarded the race win instead of Tekno Autosports’ paid Jonathon Webb and Will Davison.

“The Appeal confirms the intention of the team to appeal the severity of the 15 second post-race time penalty handed down to Car #88 (Jamie Whincup/Paul Dumbrell) for Careless Driving after causing contact with Car #33 (Scott McLaughlin/David Wall) at Turn 21 on Lap 150 of the 2016 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000,” said the CAMS statement.

“Contrary to media reports, the result of the Bathurst 1000 is still subject to the Court’s final determination,” it continued. “The Court has the power to impose its own penalty which may or may not include time penalties.”

The appeal will be heard on Tuesday 18th October at 7pm AEDT.
