Rick Kelly goes below Supercars lap record in Sydney Motorsport Park test

Nissan Motorsport driver Rick Kelly went below the Supercars lap record during the pre-season test at Sydney Motorsport Park today.

The 2006 champion lapped the circuit in 1:28.78 with the new super soft Dunlop control tyres, just beating Chaz Mostert’s record from August last year.

“We did a lot of running on the new tyre today and feel that Dunlop has done a great job,” said Kelly to Supercars.com.

“It gives us good confidence because we had some work to do when we left this track late last year. On the old tyre, teams like Red Bull had a great handle on it, but we want to be the team that gets a handle on this tyre quicker than others. We need to go over everything we’ve learnt today and come out swinging in Adelaide.”

DJR Team Penske driver Scott McLaughlin was a mere 0.012 seconds behind Kelly in his brand new Ford Falcon, with his team-mate Fabian Coulthard just below a tenth behind.

Prodrive Racing Australia driver Mostert made it three Fords in the top four, with reigning champion Shane van Gisbergen rounding off the top five, despite suffering from a steering vibration issue.
