Shane van Gisbergen made it two out of two in Adelaide

Shane van Gisbergen has started the 2017 Supercars season perfectly by winning both races on the streets of Adelaide, beating Scott McLaughlin in the second race of the Clipsal 500.

The Triple Eight Race Engineering driver claimed pole position once again in the Shootout ahead of DJR Team Penske team-mates Fabian Coulthard and McLaughlin.

The Ford duo claimed the lead of the race at the start, with Coulthard heading McLaughlin.

Different pitstop strategies saw McLaughlin in the lead toward the end of the race. But van Gisbergen closed in rapidly and made his move just three laps from the end when McLaughlin ran wide.

The Holden driver went on to win the race with over ten seconds ahead of McLaughlin in second, while Prodrive Racing Australia driver Chaz Mostert made it two Fords on the podium in third.

James Courtney claimed fourth position but was involved in an incident with Simona de Silvestro at half distance that will be investigated after the race. The Nissan Motorsport driver was turned into a spin by Courtney in the final corner, dropping her to finish 23rd and one lap behind at the end.

Coulthard, who held the lead initially, crossed the line in fifth ahead of former champion Jamie Whincup who had to fight his way from tenth on the grid after a mistake in qualifying.

Tim Slade and Cameron Waters rounded off the top eight while Todd Kelly was the best Nissan driver in ninth position.

There was one retirement in the race in the form of Nick Percat who clipped the wall at Turn 8 on the first lap.

Reigning champion van Gisbergen heads the championship standings on 300 points, 51 points more than Coulthard and Courtney who shares second place.
