Roberto Colciago praises competitive field after testing

Two-time STCC champion and 2016 TCR Italy champion Roberto Colciago was eighth fastest in the two-hour test session at the Rustavi International Motopark in Georgia on Friday, just under four-tenths of a second behind the leader.

The Italian will race for the full year with the Hungarian M1RA team, with support from Honda Civic TCR builders JAS Motorsport, after winning the TCR Italy title in dominant fashion last year with AGS Motorsport.

“It will be interesting this year,” said Colciago to TouringCarTimes. “We’ll try our best to win the championship, but then that’s like all the drivers.”

The Rustavi circuit is new to the TCR calendar and indeed to international racing, with many drivers finding the circuit quite a challenge for the first round.

“The circuit is interesting,” explained Colciago. “It has quite fast corners and slow corners, so it’s a medium-fast circuit. The asphalt is really aggressive, so the tyres went off right away, so we have to find the right set-up.

“After the first test, everyone is within just a few tenths, so you can see how competitive it is.”
