First Symmons Plains race red-flagged after big 12-car crash

The first Supercars race of the weekend at Symmons Plains has been red-flagged after just two laps following a big crash involving 12 cars.

The crash happened at Turn 4, caused by contact between cars heading to the hairpin in the wet conditions, sending Garry Rogers Motorsport driver Garth Tander into a spin and collecting almost a third of the field.

Drivers involved in the accident were Tander, Rick Kelly, Tim Slade, Nick Percat, Tim Blanchard, James Moffat, Scott Pye, James Courtney, Alex Rullo, Will Davison, Taz Douglas and Simona De Silvestro.

Supercars.com state that the cars of Tekno Autosports driver Davison and Nissan Motorsport driver Kelly seemed to sustain the most damage, with Davison being taken to hospital with back pains.

”I think that’s the last we’ll ever see of that car given what we’ve just seen there. It was a case of wrong place, wrong time. No one likes to see that stuff,” said Scott Sinclair of Nissan Motorsport to Supercars.com.

The race will not be resumed, with Holden’s Shane van Gisbergen being declared the winner of the race.
