Ash Sutton: “We’re getting there”

Ash Sutton said he felt first free practice at Donington Park was an indication that Team BMR is ‘getting there’ with the Subaru Levorg after breaking into the top ten on the timing sheets.

The reigning Jack Sears Trophy holder was easily the quickest of the four BMR drivers during the session as he lapped just under six-tenths of a second off the pace set by Rob Austin.

Sutton goes into the weekend looking to score points for the first time this weekend after a tough start to his campaign at Brands Hatch and he expressed confidence that the team had made steps forwards with the car.

“We’re getting there step-by-step,” he said. “It’s good to be the second quickest of the rear wheel drive cars and fastest Subaru, which shows we are moving in the right direction. We need to just keep chipping away at things until we find the sweet spot with the car, but we aren’t a million miles away.

“The car feels better than it did at Brands Hatch, although our results there didn’t reflect the pace in the car as we could have had three top ten finishes there.

“Our race pace is better than our one lap pace and that is something we’ll work on during FP2. We have a list of things we are working through and we need to keep ticking the boxes so we can nail the set-up we need.”
