Frédéric Vervisch fastest in second free practice at Spa-Francorchamps

Comtoyou Racing’s Frédéric Vervisch was fastest in today’s free practice session after a last-gasp improvement under the flag. The Belgian moved Jean-Karl Vernay’s WRT Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR to second, with stable-mate Maxime Potty in third.

The session was lively, as several drivers gained and lost the lead of the standings. Halfway through the session it was WRT’s Rob Huff in the lead, with Comtoyou’s Stefano Comini in second and Jean-Karl Vernay third in the Leopard-backed Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR. Several drivers were given track limits warnings, including Huff, M1RA’s Attila Tassi and Edouard Mondron.

By the end of the session, when Jean-Karl Vernay had fought his way back into the lead ahead of Maxime Potty, Frédéric Vervisch pulled off a remarkable third sector, which handed him the fastest lap outright this weekend, emerging more than half a second quicker than Vernay and six faster than Potty.

Guillaume Mondron was the fastest SEAT driver in fourth, ahead of Huff and Tassi. Mat’o Homola also improved late in the session to bring his Opel Astra TCR up to seventh, one tenth quicker than Comini. Tom Coronel was ninth in the Boutsen Ginion Honda, with Gianni Morbidelli completing the top ten in the WestCoast Racing Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR, despite looking on course to improve in the last lap of the session. The gaps between the drivers are now much tighter, proving that they are getting closer to the limit on the iconic 7.0 km-circuit of Spa-Francorchamps.

Both Rob Huff and Attila Tassi were called to report to the stewards due to repeated infringements of track limits. Qualifying is scheduled for tomorrow at 13:05.
