Kevin Abbring lauds Peugeot progress after second-place finish at Zandvoort

World Rally Championship regular Kevin Abbring took his best result in TCR Benelux along with co-driver Aurélien Comte in the qualifying long race at Zandvoort, with Comte leading the early stages of the race.

The team fell behind the Delahaye Volkswagen of Giacomo Altoè during the pit stop sequence, but went on to finish comfortably in second, the best result for the Peugeot 308 this year.

“My team-mate has developed the car and has been racing with the car for three years. I normally do rallies only, so it’s something new, but I think we both did a great job,” said Abbring to TouringCarTimes.

“When we changed over I joined the race in P2. The guy ahead was faster than me, but I was able to extend the gap to P3 which was something I didn’t expect.”

After a difficult first weekend in Spa for Peugeot, though not the DG Sport Compétition team who had great results with the Opel Astra which they run in the TCR International Series, the shorter Zandvoort circuit seems far more suited to the Peugeot and to the Volkswagen Golf.

“Spa was just way too fast for this car, but here it’s a lot more technical,” explained Abbring. “There are some slow corners, and I think that as we don’t have that much power and torque it’s also a bit nicer on the tyres so we’re able to push a bit harder than the others.”
