Spengler moves closer to BMW switch
The rumors that current championship leader and Mercedes driver Bruno Spengler is going to switch to BMW next year are growing stronger.
The Canadian has driven for Mercedes in the DTM since 2005 with second in the championship twice as his best result so far.
BMW are reported to have contacted Spengler early this year as a part of their build up process for 2012. Spengler does either not want to confirm or deny the ongoing rumors of his switch in an interview with Autosport.
“I don’t want to say more than I said a few races ago, I can’t comment,” said Spengler.
BMW has so far only confirmed two drivers, Andy Priaulx and Augusto Farfus, to the six available seats for 2012. While a good portion of the remaining drivers are reported to be taken from BMW Motorsport’s existing line up, BMW is going to take in drivers that are currently racing in the DTM.
Spengler is currently heading the championship on 47 points, seven points more than Audi driver Martin Tomczyk.
