Sini takes maiden win in eventful second Mugello race
Francesco Sini took his first win ever in the Superstars Series. The Solaris Motorsport driver held off Stefano Gabellini and Thomas Biagi, who completed the podium for BMW.
Gianni Morbidelli and Sandro Bettini both missed the start of the second race due to the damages sustained in the first heat. Ananda Mikola started from pole and retained the lead after the first lap, with Sini, Max Pigoli, Vitantonio Liuzzi and Andrea Larini behind him.
The Race 1 winner overtook Liuzzi for fourth on the third lap and launched himself towards Pigoli, who was in third. A contact between the two put them both out of the race, as Johnny Herbert was also involved in the accident and had to stop as well.
Gabellini was therefore up to third as Sini passed Mikola for the lead, while the BMW driver soon passed the Jaguar to take second. Towards the end of the race Biagi managed to pass both Liuzzi and Mikola and went up to third, while championsihp leader Kristoffersson had to settle for seventh after fighting for sixth with Mauro Cesari.
The Swede’s lead in the championship is now down to 17 points, with Biagi passing Liuzzi in the standings by two points. Andrea Larini is fourth, a further 12 points behind his fellow Mercedes driver, while Sini’s win puts the Chevrolet driver up to fifth, 35 points behind Kristoffersson.
The Superstars Series resumes in a month at Hungaroring for its second event outside Italy.
