First airport race at Östersund awaits STCC

The Scandinavian Touring Car Championship heads to its first ever airport race at Östersund in the north of Sweden this weekend. Volkswagen driver Johan Kristoffersson heads to the race as championship leader.
“I have seen a map of the track, but I have no real idea of what to expect of the track or if it is going to suit our car. I am hoping to take advantage of the Carrera Cup test before the first STCC test,” said Kristoffersson, who also heads the Carrera Cup Scandinavia points table.

Kristoffersson’s closest rival is reigning champion and Chevrolet driver Rickard Rydell, currently nine points behind.

“I take one race at a time, it is close in the championship and it is all about continuing to score points,” said Rydell.

Tomas Engström has climbed the championship table in the last couple of races and is currently fourth in the championship on 95 points behind Chevrolet driver Michel Nykjaer on 119 points. But the Honda driver is a bit upset over Nykjaer’s team mate Rydell after the previous race at Mantorp Park when the two made contact while fighting for the lead.

“If Rydell hadn’t driven the way he did, I would have won. But I am looking forward to Östersund. I have never before felt this confidence behind the wheel and there is nothing that can stop us this weekend,” said Engström.

The races will be held on a temporary track on Östersund’s airport Frösön, as shown in the picture below.
