According to BMW Motorsport chef Mario Theissen, the German based DTM is not a genuine Touring Car championship, but more like a GT championship. Theissen says that's one of the main reasons why BMW is not in DTM and won't be in the DTM either in the near future.
"We commit to Touring Car racing in a different way", Theissen said. "The DTM is a spectacular racing series, and they have great cars. But this way of racing doesn't suit our program."
"The way I look at it the DTM isn't Touring Car racing, but GT racing", Theissen commented to the series.
The championship is desperately looking for a third manufacturer to enter, but BMW doesn't seem to want to leave the World Touring Car Championship for the DTM.
"I would even rank the DTM at the top of GT racing. GT racing, spectacular with good cars."
